Multiunit Operators at Finance Conference

On Thursday 12th April GreenEarth® Cleaning hosted a Business Briefing on the subject of ‘Sustainable Aftercare for Garments and Textiles’ at the Marriott Grosvenor Square in London.
Keynote speaker for the day was GreenEarth President Tim Maxwell, alongside Louann Spirito of SGS and myself.
It was a great opportunity for us to talk a room of retailers, manufacturers and testing houses about the GreenEarth® difference and how it can make a difference to how retailers operate and to our planet.
Following the introductions, Tim talked to the delegates about what GreenEarth® is, who we are as a team and how important a role we play in garment aftercare. Talking not only about how at worst GreenEarth® performs as well as other solutions and in a lot of cases much better, because of no colour loss, no shrinkage and most importantly because it is non-toxic… particularly important for the planet and for those who work in the aftercare industry.
Tim highlighted how more and more dry cleaners around the world are using GreenEarth and that D5 the purest form of liquid silicone used for dry cleaning, is also used in many products found in most households, such as body lotions, shaving foam and deodorants. Then going onto make the point that GreenEarth is mostly recycled, loses less energy than other solutions and ensures that clothing and textiles can last longer – drawing comparisons with the key fundamentals of the circular economy.
Next to speak, was Louann Spirito, Director of Technical Support for the Softlines area of SGS. Louann gave an insight into the business and also her years of experience working in testing labs. Her recollection of how Perchloroethylene would melt the tongs she would use for textile testing, really got the delegates’ minds turning! Louann relayed how the use of the GreenEarth machine in Guangzhou, China has really made SGS look at testing within its global business.
SGS have had the machine in operation for over 2 years and has worked well to service retailers and manufacturers, particularly in the far east. Their evaluation is consistent with the excellent consumer experience of GreenEarth and again particularly around embellished items and leather garments. There are many challenges facing the Testing industry, which Louann talked through and one of those challenges is Sustainability.
The GreenEarth and SGS relationship is one that will last long into the future.
Tim then took to the stage again and talked about new developments within GreenEarth, particularly the increased use of the Activated Clay Filtration (ACF) programme. Using Activated Clay Filtration powder combined with environmentally improved detergent (Sustain) and Spotting Agent (Prime), affiliates around the globe are seeing even better results from GreenEarth with a reduction of energy and water usage by 50 per cent.
GreenEarth is now in over 40 countries via over 1800 dry cleaners and 2018 is looking like a year for continued growth and development.
It was my turn to speak to the audience, demonstrating some of the differences that we had seen on silks, leathers and other items, stressing how important it is to test to get the best results for them and the customer.
Sustainability has crept up the agenda of Fashion retailers significantly over the last 18 months and that has shown through the enquiries and meetings that we have had. I talked through the work that I have done over the last 3 years and how there are options to attend technical meetings or indeed for me to present to garment technicians at head offices.
Testing is fundamental to the performance of the garment and the customer experience. Delegates were able to see test results for themselves, the GreenEarth difference on leather swatches and pieces of embellished materials.
Attendees were able to understand how they could promote GreenEarth on their care labels, followed up with colleague and customer communications, informing them what GreenEarth is and how it can be accessed globally. The support that GreenEarth® is able to be in a position to give to retailers and affiliates alike is second to none, due to their customer loyalty and reputation.
Over the last 20 years, GreenEarth® has established its own heritage as a sustainable form of aftercare. It is by far the most credible alternative option to perc. Other entrants to the market may have an advantage over perc… but fail to tick as many boxes as GreenEarth® – the performance and environmental statistics speak for themselves.

Tailored Brands, Inc. (NYSE: TLRD) announced, in a statement March 14, 2018, the company sold its MW Cleaners business on March 3, 2018, for approximately $18 million.
“MW Cleaners operated as an independent retail dry cleaning business separate from our vertically integrated dry cleaning operations that support our formalwear rental business. As part of our commitment to optimize our portfolio, focus on our core businesses and unlock cash flow, we decided to sell MW Cleaners,” said Tailored Brands Chief Executive Officer Doug Ewert.
At the time of the transaction, MW Cleaners operated 38 retail dry cleaning, laundry and heirlooming facilities in Austin and Houston, Texas.
The EDIT TX group purchased MW Cleaners businesses from Tailored Brands on March 3, 2018. EDIT TX will convert 36 MW Cleaners stores in Houston, Texas and the MW Cleaners delivery business in Austin, Texas to Tide Dry Cleaners. EDIT TX will also begin operating the 2 Tide Dry Cleaners stores in Austin, Texas.
EDIT TX includes Tide Dry Cleaners franchisees that own and operate units in Amarillo, TX; Austin TX; Kansas City MO; and Lubbock TX. The multi-generational leadership of MW Cleaners are partners in the EDIT TX group. Michael E. Nesbit will be the CEO of the organization and the entire MW Cleaners team has been retained. The group said in a prepared statement, “EDIT TX is thrilled to expand the Tide Dry Cleaners brand throughout Texas with some of the most influential leaders in the dry cleaning industry.”
OXXO Care Cleaners ® Celebrates Earth Day with Incentives for Green Conscious Customers
Hollywood, FL, April 4, 2018— OXXO Care Cleaners ®, the environmentally friendly garment cleaning franchise that was first to use GreenEarth® solvents while offering 24/7 ATM-style service, announced today that the franchise will be carry out numerous incentives throughout the month of April for eco-conscious customers, in addition to community activities in celebration of Earth Day, and a 15% discount on all dry cleaning services.
“During the month of April, in celebration of Earth Day, we will carry out a Reuse and Recycle with OXXO campaign, consisting of two parts: The first involves incentivizing clients to recycle their OXXO hangers and garment bags by bringing them back to the store. We hope to be able to Reuse and Recycle as many hangers as possible, then send all unusable hangers to a recycling agent, incentivizing all customers to partner with OXXO to reduce landfill waste,” said Salomon Mishaan, Founder & CEO of OXXO Care Cleaners.
The second effort involves a “Spring Cleaning” clothing drive in which we are asking customers to donate unused and unwanted clothes (men’s, women’s & children’s) to Dress For Success & Suited For Success in order to help the needy and the environment, reducing landfill clothing and waste. Dress for Success is a Miami Non- Profit that helps unemployed men and women trying to re-enter the workforce. Their mission is to empower women and men to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help them thrive in work and in life.
Additionally in April, OXXO and South Florida’s Communities In Bloom (CIB) will continue their social responsibility partnership with several events to help underprivileged children (and women) in South Florida communities.
“OXXO is a proud supporter of a year-long effort organized by Sophia Arana and Evely Forte of Communities in Bloom to help the needy in South Florida. The 2018 program began with an event on March 24th at Touching Miami with Love (1350 SW 4th Street Homestead, FL 33030), where over 40 volunteers created beautiful flower beds and painted decorative pots,” said Mishaan. Touching Miami with Love’s children’s program focuses on inspiring, educating, and empowering needy children through educational support after school.
On April 15th, OXXO will support Communities in Bloom at Kristi House (301 NW 52nd Street Miami, FL 33127), a private, non-profit organization in Miami, Florida, dedicated to healing and eradicating child sexual abuse. Starting at 10am, CIB volunteers will create a backyard meditation garden and paint decorative pots for the children.
At the end of April, OXXO will sponsor two more CIB projects in celebration of Earth Day. These projects will be hosted at non-profits that benefit children, and they will involve painting pots, planting, and teaching children about plant care. Communities in Bloom is a non-profit,501(c)(3) organization dedicated to restoring the landscaping of local non profits that assist children in need. Their mission is to create beautiful green spaces, while simultaneously promoting a love for plants and the environment in the local community.
The brisk wind that blew over Kansas City last Thursday evening was all too fitting for a fall/winter runway. But the warm glow of the chandeliers inside The Grand Hall at Power & Light easily made up for it.
High heels. Glitzy makeup. Bright camera flashes. Kansas City Fashion Week was everything a fashion show ought to be—plus some.
Eight designers took to the U-shaped catwalk that night. From Liv’s fierce designs for women wearing sizes 12 to 36 to Nokota.Style’s distinguishable equestrian flair, this time inspired by the moon. With each and every collection, the venue’s art deco backdrop faded, only the runway in focus. By the last designer—LENZANITA Couture—the marbled floors, elegant columns, and gold accents were but a bokeh.
If I had to pick a favorite, this would be it. Anita Kealey’s fashions are truly pieces of wearable art. And her brand is entirely backed in sustainability. But it’d be hard to even guess that her creations used scraps from a local balloon manufacturer or now-obsolete media tape; it’s natural among otherwise classic shapes and lines.
As excited as I am for springtime, the olives, plums, slate blues, and heather grays LENZANITA featured had me yearning for a pile of fallen leaves. Any of the wools (from South Dakota-raised sheep, no less) would be a perfect pairing with those ankle boots in my closet, I daydreamed, sitting front row in my off-the-shoulder multi-colored maxi dress. When Kealey, herself, walked out, just imagine me as the heart-eyed emoji.
Chalk it up to this being my first fashion show, but LENZANITA is something special. I’m not the only one to notice, either. Publications like Midwest Living and Martha Stewart have already spotlighted Kealey’s work.
It’s exciting to see a Midwesterner making their mark—or the lack thereof—in today’s fashion. The industry’s future lies in brands like LENZANITA. The industry’s future lies in environmental consciousness.

Tell us where you were born, grew up, and reside today?
“I was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where the family wholesale leather cleaning business is still operating. I moved with my wife Karen and my two kids, Kelsey and Kolin, to Kansas City, Mo. where GreenEarth Cleaning is headquartered, in 2006.”
Hobbies (that you’ll admit to)?
“I enjoy water sports (skiing, sailing and boating) and I am an avid downhill skier. Given my Canadian heritage, I am required to play men’s ice hockey league twice per week in order to fit into the smaller airplane seats that are standard issue today.”
What gets you excited at work?
“I enjoy the sense of satisfaction I get when our team is able to save a dry cleaner’s location from a landlord that is not renewing a lease until we present the GreenEarth option. With the built-in safeguards that are inherent in the system, hundreds of good operators have been able to save their families financial well being. Awesome feeling!”
Lastly, tell us a secret (keep it clean) nobody knows about you?
“My secret is that someday I hope to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat…don’t tell anybody!”

SAN FRANCISCO — The Tuchman Advisory Group (T.A.G.) held an informative and successful meeting recently in Orlando, Fla., and notes: “The highlight of our meeting was touring the Walt Disney World Textile Services & Costume Processing Facility.”
“That facility cleans 30,000 pieces per day and approximately 220,000 lbs. per week. Our meetings were held in the outstanding conference facilities and restaurants at the Disney Boardwalk Hotel, and Disney Yacht and Beach Club Resorts.”
The service and attention to detail by the Disney staff was uniformly excellent regarding every aspect of our meeting, T.A.G. relates, and notes: “We stayed in luxurious rooms at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort.”
At the meeting, each T.A.G. member gave a presentation on the latest status of their company to the group. Topics addressed during the meeting included: healthcare, insurance, payroll/bookkeeping issues, 2016 vs. 2017 financial comparisons, status of 2017 goals, and setting 2018 goals.
“We were delighted that many of our members had their families join them through the weekend to enjoy the various parks at Walt Disney World,” the group adds.
The group’s next meeting, it indicates, will be hosted by Colvin Cleaners located in Buffalo, N.Y. in June, 2018.
While I like a good pub crawl as much as the next person, I’m currently more tuned in to the up-and-coming Record Store Crawls across the globe.
Get it? “Tuned in.” …Sorry.
Just step into my husband and I’s 700-square-foot apartment, and our living room is dedicated to shelves of LPs (all organized by genre, artist, and release date, of course) and a silver Audio-Technica turntable.
These collection events start in New York and Berlin on April 21, aka Record Store Day, with other cities following anytime between May and October. As per “crawl” fashion, the whole experience is community-oriented. You’re shuttled from record shop to record shop surrounded by individuals who are just as nuts about vintage vinyl as you are. Hooray! Plus, there are live performances, gift bags, and—my personal favorite—discounts to look forward to.
With LP sales on the rise thanks to hipsters like me, even new artists are producing vinyl formats of their work. It may be nice to snag the latest release, but I’m honestly more interested in what used gems I can dig up. And I like to think of it as an eco-friendly choice too. Records have been made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) since the 1950s. If you know anything about plastics, PVC is notorious for ending up in landfills and staying there. By buying that old Rolling Stones 12-inch, Mother Nature is essentially thanking me.
Purchasing second-hand is always the environmentally conscious option—and not just when it comes to music. We could be talking fashion, home furnishings, or cars, and the principle is the same. Just because it didn’t first go into a blue bin doesn’t mean you’re not recycling. Your decision is still a diversion of wastefulness.
I’m not here to promote going on a Record Store Crawl. I’m not advocating for you to like records, for that matter. But everyone does indulge in a guilty pleasure from time to time. Just know that it doesn’t always have to be brand new for you to enjoy it.

What is the most sustainable way to wash your clothes? This seems like a simple question.
But consider a couple of important factors that bear on the answer. For instance, according to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, whose mission is to accelerate the transition to a circular sustainable economy, the washing of clothing containing polyester, nylon, and acrylic fibers results in some half a million tons of plastic microfibers going down the laundry drains of the world each year. This is equivalent to 50 billion plastic bottles being released annually into the ocean as a result of washing these textiles.
Just as importantly, disposing of garments quickly (as in the trend towards fast fashion) rather than caring for higher quality garments over a longer period adds significantly to the amount of textiles being discarded. In another report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, it is estimated on a worldwide basis that currently one garbage truck of textiles is being landfilled or burned every second!
From a sustainability point of view, we believe that the closed loop nature of dry cleaning eliminates the down-the-drain problems associated with the release of plastic microfibers to our world’s oceans. And it permits the long term care of high quality natural fiber garments thereby minimizing the damaging effects on our world’s landfills and from the CO2 emissions attributed to much of the waste created by garments not cared for over time.
Thus, the answer to what is the most sustainable way to wash your clothes is actually a trick question. For the most sustainable way to care for your clothes, and the environment, is actually to dry clean them!

Sustainable Aftercare Business Briefing

For several years, GreenEarth has been working either directly with retailers or alongside partners, to increase our awareness on the global aftercare stage. The aim being to get them to recommend our unique Sustainable aftercare process, either through care label artwork or via communications to their customers and employees.
GreenEarth® has done this by meeting with textile professionals, presenting to their teams or hosting technical visits to the U.K. GreenEarth® Master Licensor, Johnsons Cleaners. We are pleased to announce that GreenEarth® will be hosting its first ever business briefing on Garment and Textile Aftercare on 12th April, in London, England.
The seminar will be hosted by myself and the keynote speaker will be GreenEarth® President, Tim Maxwell.
Tim will be speaking about the evolution of GreenEarth® and how it contributes to the circular economy. Other areas being discussed in the session will be:
- Garment and Textile testing
- Care labelling
- Communication to Customers and Teams
- How sustainable aftercare can form part of any Sustainability strategy
- The role GreenEarth® plays in all areas of garment and textile care.
We will be joined on the day by representatives from Johnson Cleaners and SGS to talk about the role of GreenEarth® in garment rectification and observations on GreenEarth’s performance when carrying out garment testing for retailers and manufacturers.

GreenEarth & Fashion Week Go Hand-In-Hand

It goes without saying New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest weeks of the year in the fashion industry. Fashion designers, models, and admirers alike all gather to check out the hottest new trends and witness the eccentric art that is fashion firsthand. Dry cleaners not excluded—in fact dry cleaners are an essential component that allows this train to keep rollin’. We should own it.
How cool is it to see GreenEarth Affiliates like Madame Paulette and Next Cleaners grabbing the bull by the horns. Of course so many GreenEarth Affiliates are out there doing exciting things and getting involved in their communities, but these are a couple of stories we’ve seen recently with New York Fashion Week.
If you aren’t already, maybe it’d be a good time to consider following suit. Even if you are not in New York, partner with a local designer and host an event during Fashion Week. If nothing else, get involved in the conversation via social media. All eyes are on New York Fashion Week this time of year, let’s be a part of that.
Not to mention all of the other cities which host their own fashion week throughout the year. If you are in or nearby one of those cities, get on board. As I said before, contact some local designers and put together an event in your store. It doesn’t have to be a full blown fashion show, but hosting a fashion/art open with wine and snacks is a great way to get some solid PR for your brand and make sure your community sees you as more than a dry cleaner. You’re a member of the community and a leader in the sustainable fashion movement!
Raul Solis, the designer behind the buzzy label LRS, held his fifth show on 24th Street and 2nd Avenue in New York City, at Next Cleaners, a dry cleaning chain. After waiting in the aftermath of a rainstorm among a hoard of kicky pant-wearing downtown kids, everyone shuffled inside, and the space turned into a kind of hipster sauna.
Despite the heat, the moisture, and the so-close-you-can-smell-the-nicotine-on-your-neighbor’s-hands tight space, Solis’s vision was excitingly refreshing. There were no models: Dry cleaner attendants (in LRS-branded aprons) carried plastic-wrapped pieces and hung them on a conveyor. The clothes were great, including an oversize biker jacket with a large circle scooped out from the stomach, a pair of jeans made of LRS patches, and a tight T-shirt with a rooster’s head.
Solis also collaborated with photographer Ryker Allen to shoot and print banal objects. “We shot mundane images like tomatoes and mushrooms and portraits,” said Solis. “We wanted it to feel mundane but elevating the mundane.” The concept worked. Never has a tomato looked so good, plastered on the upper back of a trench coat turned cape with versatile vent, dotted with wriggling bolete mushrooms. (A fellow showgoer noted, “It’s like some of that Chef’s Table show shit. It makes me want to cook. The ingredients look beautiful.” True.) Also, a familiar insider face made a cameo on one of the tunics: the enlarged visage of a handsome Johnny Petrozzino, a sometimes-model who also starred in the Helmut Lang Exactitudes campaign.
Sure, Solis’s Laundromat idea could come off of as gimmicky. During Fashion Week, many young designers are vying to be so out-of-the-box that their attempts fall short and become try-hard. But Solis’s focus on making the yawn-worthy great is what made his collection compelling. And fun. Let’s handle LRS with care.

OAKLAND COUNTY — Rochester Outreach and Charity for Kids, known as ROCKit, is asking local women to give new life to their special dresses for the organization’s annual ROCK the Prom dress giveaway.
For a third consecutive year, ROCKit is collecting donations of recently worn, floor-length prom dresses, as well as shoes and accessories, for its event — which gives high school teens free used prom dresses and accessories.
“I think every high school teen — if they get invited or want to go — should get to go to their prom,” said Kathy Campbell, who serves on the ROCKit board. “The dresses are very expensive — a lot of times you might think that you can get a dress for $100, but the reality is they are really more like $200-$300, and by the time you add jewelry and a shawl and a purse, it can be up to $400. So having the opportunity to limit that expense makes it possible for some kids to go.”
ROCKit, a program of the Community Foundation of Greater Rochester, is collecting gently used or new items — including long dresses, shoes and accessories — for the event through Feb. 28. Items can be dropped off during business hours at Kidz1st Pediatrics, 2370 Walton Blvd. in Rochester Hills; The Funky Frog Children’s Resale Boutique in downtown Rochester; or Classic Lanes bowling alley, 2145 Avon Industrial Drive in Rochester Hills. Gowns in sizes 0-6 and 14-20 are specifically needed this year, according to Campbell.
The gowns will be professionally cleaned by Lapels Dry Cleaning, an environmentally friendly dry cleaning company at the corner of Rochester and Auburn roads.
High school teens from all over who show a student ID are invited to attend ROCK the Prom events to try on and pick out one free dress noon-3 p.m. March 24 and noon-2 p.m. March 25 at the Auburn Hills Community Center, 1827 N. Squirrel Road in Auburn Hills. Campbell said that any teen, regardless of income, can take home a free prom dress this year.
“Last year, 90 percent of the students were from northern Oakland County, but we did have kids learn about it who were from Canton and Chelsea and Bay City, and we don’t turn anybody away,” Campbell explained. “If a girl decides that choosing a gently used gown is something that they want to do to save on expenses for prom, we don’t (turn them away).”
The dress distribution event will include a gown and accessory salon for guests to review a collection of over 400 formal dresses, and a fitting room with staff to assist guests.
Last year, the event served 58 teens.
“Last year, every girl that took home a dress was able to choose two accessories, and they all did. … They left with a complete outfit,” Campbell said. “For the 58 girls that we clothed, it made a difference.”

Dry Cleaners on Social Media?

“Why would there be dry cleaners on social media?” Ah, yes. That’s one question I’m a little too familiar with. Well, I’ll start here: 81 percent of Americans had some sort of social media profile in a 2017 gathering (which is a 5 percent jump from 2016). And there are 2.07 billion monthly users on Facebook, alone.
While all 2.07 billion people won’t be your dry cleaning customer, I think it’s safe to say you have the potential to reach a good chunk. Take our home office location in Kansas City, for example; when I put a 10 mile radius around downtown’s center and filter by a demographic of ages 28 and up with a $75,000 and over income, I still have the estimation of reaching 310,000 individuals. Advertising and what Facebook calls “boosting a post” do have a large hand in that, but that’s where we come in!

Yours truly is your content creator, emoji expert, GIF goddess…OK, I’ll stop. By the way, we can also help run your Yelp page by monitoring reviews that are posted.

I’m confident enough to say that our formula works. We mostly grow followings organically, and we’re currently averaging about 10 page likes per week. Engagement is of huge importance here. So another part of my job is logging in to each of your accounts a couple times a week and interacting with other businesses and organizations around you, whether that be by liking, commenting, or sharing. This practice not only gives your business more personality, but it provides yet another opportunity to gain customers. Say I comment on a local bridal salon’s photo—a recent bride who bought her dress there might see it, look further into your services, and realize you do wedding gown preservation. Social media is just as much posting as it is staying part of the surrounding conversations.
